Alderman Park, ITFC

Alderman Park Recreation Ground sits just off Sir Alf Ramsey Way, right under the gaze of Ipswich Town Football Club on Portman Road. As well as being a great park, it’s the best place to meet friends before games.

On our walk, we found a large playground, kids playing football after school, dog walkers, wooden boardwalks over boggy bits and reed beds along the River Gipping. We also found an orchard of apple and pear trees planted by @thetreecouncil as part of their “50 Golden Orchards” project. We’re looking forward to going back in the Autumn to see what’s growing and who’s enjoying them.

The park is named after the old Alderman Canal and you can still follow trails along what’s left of it. If you keep going, you can loop round towards the Suffolk Retail Park and even walk the river all the way to Sproughton Mill and Bramford Meadows. Much wilder than you’d expect this close to town.

Bonus tip: Met a dog called Winkle (real name Stanford). His owner says the best time to visit is 7am when the stadium lights turn the sky pink. Sounds magical. We’ll be gback in the Summer to take more photos.
