Orwell Country Park

Woods, River & The Orwell Bridge

If you’ve ever driven over the Orwell Bridge and wondered what’s down there beneath it all, it’s Orwell Country Park. It’s 300 acres of proper Suffolk countryside, tucked between the River Orwell and the A14. Officially opened in 1995, the park is made up of a patchwork of landscapes; ancient woods, heathland, meadows, mudflats and four main areas to explore: Piper’s Vale and Elm Hill, Bridge Wood, Braziers Wood and Meadow, and Pond Hall Farm.

It’s a great place to walk. The trails suit every pace, whether you’re up for a long hike or just fancy a gentle stroll. Families with older kids will love it (though it’s a bit of a challenge with a buggy as there are lots of tree roots and natural paths). And if you’ve got a dog, they’ll love it.

You can walk right underneath the Orwell Bridge. The views are brilliant, boats sailing past on the river, the bridge’s reflection, and if you go in spring there are loads of bluebells in the woods.

There are a couple of car parks (one down a long drive off the main road, another over the A14), and it’s about 10–15 minutes on foot to reach the shore. The paths down to the water can be steep and a little wild, so wear good shoes, wellies in winter. And keep an eye on the tide (the black estuary mud is slippery and easy to lose a wellie in).

Facilities are minimal. No cafe or toilets.
